Of those 191 million barrels, 190 million barrels were used as feedstock and 1 million barrels were consumed as fuel to manufacture plastic products.

Degradation of plastic begins with photo degradation which leads to thermo oxidative degradation. Photo degradation is a very slow and toxic process, which breaks plastic materials into toxic components that contaminate both soil and water.

One of the most common chemicals in plastics is Bisphenol A. This compound is an endocrine disruptor which can mimic estrogen and has been linked with an array of afflictions as diverse as diabetes, heart disease, breast cancer, thyroid disorders, ADHD, infertility, erectile dysfunction, early-onset menstruation and obesity.
